Exploring Mathematics and Its Applications - 3rd International Mathematics Conference

During a pre-school session

Strathmore University’s Institute of Mathematics Sciences (IMS) hosted the 3rd International Mathematics Conference under the exciting theme Exploring Mathematics and its Applications. Attended by professors and mathematics gurus from across the globe, the five-day conference tackled topics that included; Dynamical Systems and Differential, Algebra, Geometry, Topology, Analysis and Applications, Mathematics Geometry, Probability& Statistics, Computer Science, Software Modelling, Numerical Analysis, Control Theory, Bio-Mathematics, Mathematical Finance etc.

Giving his welcoming address, Vice Chancellor Strathmore University Prof. John Odhiambo highlighted the importance of re-unifying mathematics to be understood by everyone. Prof. Odhiambo highlighted the fact that there are new areas that can be explored in mathematics distinguishing between pure and applied mathematics; “New areas of mathematics are coming up now because we have the capacity. Opportunities to present new applications should be taken in when they are confined to mathematics. The distinction between pure and applied mathematics is now based on attitude of the mathematicians.”

The goal of the conference was to provide mathematics researchers from around the world working in various mathematical disciplines, an avenue to discuss latest developments and share their research results in contemporary areas of mathematics research and applications. The conference saw the blending of young scholars and aspiring mathematicians, with experts in the mathematics field. Opportunities to share research areas, obtaining advice from experts while exploring the research further was very evident.

Invited Plenary Speakers for the conference included experts such as;

  • Prof. Peter Olszewski (Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, USA)
  • Prof. Maria Rifqi (Universite Pantheon-Assas, France)
  • Dr. Pete Van Jaarsveld (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa)
  • Prof. Michael Ingleby (United Kingdom)
  • Prof. Samuel Manda (South African Medical Research Council, South Africa)

The conference began with a two-day pre-conference school where professors and young scholars discussed their key areas of interest, while the rest of the three days involved plenary sessions that provided an environment for all mathematicians to come together and discuss various topics and discoveries in mathematics.
